Last week I wrote a bit about Michael Hutchinson's, The Book of Floating. I had mentioned that reading the book caused me to wonder why floating isn't more popular. The book was written in the early 80's, almost 30 years ago. It was apparent that Hutchinson was convinced that it was going to become the wave of the future. It did not. I have been pondering this all weekend. Why? After doing some research I think I have come up with some reasons.
1. The people that were associated with floatation were also affiliated with Pyschedelic drugs.
2. Sensory Deprivation has misleading connotations that scares a large segment of the population.
3. The 80's were the "Greed is Good" decade. Most people were seeking and achieving material gains outside of themselves.
4. The A.I.D.S. epidemic was just starting to show itself. People were afraid of sanitation.
These are just a few that I have come up with. Again, my intention is to overcome these obstacles and bring floatation to the masses. It is the most incredible tool for whatever ails you. Drop me a message if you have any comments. I would love to get other people's perspective on this. There is no disputing Floatation's efficacy. There must be other reasons it has stayed a hidden secret all of these years.
5. The tanks were ugly, uninviting and perhaps even a little scary.
ReplyDeleteI used to operate box tanks back in the early 90's and it was hard to get people to try it. Now days with the curvy i-sopod pods it's much easier.
Great blog BTW
Thanks. Great point. I have a box tank that I use daily. Same environment inside...not so much on the outside. Some of my more timid friends have the exact same thoughts, like, "dude it looks like a coffin". I do like the i-sopod. Send me one to try. Haha.
ReplyDeleteI asked the Doctor who owned the first float tank I used this exact same question and his response was, that in using the floatation tank as a tool to make you the most perfect form of yourself gives you the feeling of having an advantage over those around you. Inherently some floaters wish to keep their secret to success just that a secret advantage.
ReplyDeleteMy friend who I learned about float tanks from a few years ago said that we are basically uncorking and showing the genie to everyone.
And that is what leads us to Altered States, A propaganda film to cast floating in a negative light as something that is dark, scary, and not at all pleasant.
Its an exciting time to be in the floatation business glad to have you on board to discuss it with everyone.
